At Journalism.co.uk we’ve been busy planning the next news:rewired digital journalism conference, which takes place on 1 December in London. And with under three weeks to go, we are pleased to announce speakers from CNN and The Economist will be joining our expert line-up on the day.
Reaching out to mobile-only readers
For many news outlets, mobile-only audiences have grown to significant proportions, and will continue to do so. But what do people who only access news via their smartphones or tablets want to see when it comes to news stories? Are they likely to use an app to find the latest updates, and what role does personalisation play in getting news into their hands?
The opening panel at the next news:rewired will look at these issues and more, offering delegates insights from international publishers who are actively working towards making their news work for mobile-only audiences. Inga Thordar, editorial and programming director, CNN Digital International, is the latest speaker to join the panel.
Based in the network’s London bureau, Thordar oversees all digital news and sports output, as well as managing, coordinating and communicating the content flow of other digital units, including CNN’s Hong Kong team. Prior to joining CNN, Thordar spent fifteen years at the BBC. From leading various editorial teams, to producing content on the field, to newsgathering – Thordar worked her way up to senior editor.
Joining her on the panel are Brianne O’Brien, mobile editor, BuzzFeed News; Subhajit Banerjee, mobile editor, the Guardian; Christopher Meighan, director for digital design, emerging news products, The Washington Post; and Michael Kowalski, founder, Contentment.
Is there room for longform video?
Another issue at the forefront of media conversations today is the growing importance of video as part of any organisation’s online output. But is there a place for longer videos in the mix, or will people stop watching after a minute? Some news organisations are not afraid to take on the longform challenge – and some have found not only a way to make it work online, but a way to make it very successful.
Nicholas Minter-Green, president, Economist Films, will join an afternoon workshop on longform video for the mobile generation, alongside Yonni Usiskin, executive producer, Vice News, and Matt Danzico, founder, BBC Pop Up.
Economist Films launched in March as the magazine’s debut into longform documentaries. Minter-Green will give attendees and insight into how his team of 10 produces short documentaries for the web, as well as The Economist’s first longform video series, Global Compass.
