Announcing Shorthand as the latest sponsor of news:rewired

We’re delighted to announce Shorthand, a platform for the creation of interactive storytelling, as the latest sponsor of Journalism.co.uk’s digital journalism conference news:rewired.

Shorthand, which aims to simplify the process of producing full-impact multimedia stories, is working on building a public tool which is “currently in private beta”. It has, however, already worked with a number of news outlets, including first the Guardian and just this month ESPN.co.uk for their end-of-year look back at key sporting moments.

At news:rewired Ben Fogarty, executive manager of Shorthand, will take part in a workshop looking at how journalists can produce immersive stories on digital platforms.

The event agenda is available online, and tickets are still on sale for either £130 +VAT for conference-only, or £220 +VAT for news:rewired+, which includes the conference and a three-hour practical workshop the following day.

BuzzFeed’s editorial director Jack Shepherd to deliver news:rewired keynote

Jack Shepherd, editorial director of BuzzFeed, will deliver the keynote speech at next year’s news:rewired, Journalism.co.uk’s digital journalism conference.

BuzzFeed originally launched in 2006, and this November reported 130 million unique users. Known for its lists, eye-catching visuals and snappy headlines, the site is also making strides on the serious side, covering breaking news and long-form journalism.

In his keynote speech at news:rewired, Shepherd will address how news outlets can strengthen their efforts in making the content they produce more shareable.

He will also return to join the first session discussion, which will remain on the social media theme with a look at social media judgement and more on shareability.

Other sessions due to take place over the course of the day will offer expert advice and recommended tools on subjects such as how to do data journalism on a budget, engage with the community, source content from Instagram, stay secure online and produce immersive journalism.

This is Journalism.co.uk’s eleventh news:rewired conference, and is expected to be another sell out. Tickets are still available for £130 +VAT.

Announcing Tableau as latest sponsor of news:rewired

For journalists keen to get to grips with data in their reporting, and visualising the results, tools like Tableau are a valuable resource, which is why we are very pleased to announce them as the latest sponsor of news:rewired.

The one-day digital journalism conference, run by Journalism.co.uk, takes place on Thursday 20 February, and will feature an array of sessions and workshops looking at the latest innovations and opportunities for journalists to harness in their digital reporting. Here is the line-up so far.

One session in particular will offer inspiration and practical tips on how to do data journalism on a budget, addressing different tools and techniques for saving time and being more efficient when producing data-driven content.

The session will feature presentations by experts within the industry, including Esa Mäkinen, news editor of data journalism for Helsingin Sanomat and David Ottewell, head of data journalism at Trinity Mirror.

Maxime Marboeuf, data analyst at Tableau Software, will also join the panel to discuss how newsrooms of any size can use the platform – which offers a free, public version of its visualisations technology – to produce powerful data stories and visualisations, even when time or money is tight.
